USC Consulting Group Headlines Agenda at Major Paper Industry Meeting

Maintenance "best practices" presentation draws raves from mill managers in attendance

Montreal, Quebec, Canada, February 2001. Attendees at an early morning technical session of EXFOR 2001, the Canadian pulp and paper industry's annual gathering at the Palais des Congres in Montreal, were introduced to the concept and practice of "world class maintenance" by representatives from USC Consulting Group, an operating effectiveness firm well known for its work in pulp and paper mills across Canada.

John M. Hannan, USC Regional Manager, Dean J. Carrier, Operations Manager, and Paul Racher, Senior Project Manager teamed up to first define the concept of "world class" maintenance drawing from the book World Class Maintenance by Terry Wireman. They then proceeded to outline the steps a pulp or paper mill should take to become world class, and finally, discussed the economic and operational benefits of doing so. At the end of their presentation USC offered to benchmark attendees' mills against world class standards and anonymously against their peer group, and distributed a diskette to be completed and returned by anyone wanting to see how their mill measured up.

Sponsored by PAPTAC's Mechanical Engineering and Maintenance Committee and moderated by its Chairman, Andre Polegato, USC's presentation was praised afterwards by one mill manager as " the best presentation he'd ever seen at the CPPA meeting".
