Building Products

Overview: Building products manufacturer wanted to reduce empty miles driven by its 200 vehicle fleet and its dependency on higher-cost contract carriers.

Client Profile: Manufacturer of shower enclosures and whirlpool tubs.

Annual Sales: $200 Million

Total Employees: 2,000

Assignment: Assignment: Enhance existing fleet planning tools, increase backhaul revenue, and reduce nonvalue-added (empty) miles.

USCCG Action Plan: Utilized the system review process to create a common understanding of the current state utilization of PC Miler (route planning); the ADC (Automated Data Collection) device on each tractor to transmit product delivery to the AS 400 and invoice immediately; GPS (real time tractor data and mileage recording); and internet backhaul load-finding tools. Utilized the IT group to design interactive planning and reporting tools to graphically show each plant’s performance against 12 major KPIs. Multi-stop deliveries were planned and executed to drive to the furthest point, make the first delivery, and make subsequent deliveries before returning to the plant. Planning and reporting tools were implemented to create a more realistic view of total performance versus a single metric empty mile view. Made internet backhaul posting available. Frequent inter-division route pairings were defined to generate revenue and reduce divisional transportation costs.

Key Performance Indicators:Backhaul revenue increased >180%, contract carrier costs dropped >80%, empty miles were reduced 15%, and tractor/driver utilizations increased 4%.
